Wim Wenders And Company Bring Buildings To Life In 3D Documentary

Architects and directors are surprisingly similar. In charge of sculpting a multi-sensory experience and orchestrating a team to see it to fruition, the two professions demand both practicality and creativity. (Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles has said as much himself.) So it seems only natural that filmmakers would want to exploit this connection. Cue: the new Wim Wenders-produced Cathedrals of Culture, a series of 3D mini archi-mentaries that recently premiered at the Berlinale Special. Six directors—including Wenders (whose recent, brilliant 3D documentary Pina brought the world of modern dance choreography to life), Robert Redford, and Margreth Olin—have paired themselves with six exceptional buildings, producing short clips that give voice to the structures. Described as “material manifestations of human thought and action,” the buildings are intimately, viscerally explored through the directors’ cinematic journeys. Wenders told the Documentary Channel that, “I have always wanted to do a film about architecture, and I have a lot of architect friends."
