A Swedish Bunker Turned Tranquil Retreat Flies Under the Radar

"Flying under the radar," or moving undetectable, is a good tactic for combat, and also genteel domestic architecture. This summer holiday house in Sweden is barely noticeable form the outside, and that's no coincidence. It was built inside a former military bunker. It is not your everyday refurbishment. The interior is made new by washing the existing walls and replacing fixtures, furniture and fireplaces are added, but not much else. The house is located in the remote Bungenäs area in the north of Gotland, in an area that is a former limestone quarry and abandoned military area — now full of underground rooms and secret bunkers. This particular bunker is on a peninsula and the house peeks out of the hillside, barely giving away its location. A glass facade was added to the structure and faces the sea. Glass doors were inserted into cutouts in the thick concrete walls, while the main entry is the original military entrance.
