The Ta Tien community, a historic area of Bangkok, is lined with the city's quintessential "shophouses": multistory residences with large rooms that can host street-level commercial spaces. It's a charming architectural landscape located near iconic structures like the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun)—one of the most recognizable silhouettes of Thailand—and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho), which is home to more than 90 pagodas. Maharat Road, which includes a row of shophouses built in the late 1800s, runs through part of a particularly thriving section of the neighborhood. It is here that Onion architects have converted seven adjacent structures to create the charming Sala Rattanakosin, Bangkok's newest boutique hotel. A project of Sala Resorts and Spa, the Sala Rattanakosin incorporates local aesthetics to provide contemporary amenities without exerting an imposing presence on the historic neighborhood. The 1,500-square-meter space includes 17 boutique rooms, several restaurants, an outdoor deck, an indoor bar, and a rooftop bar.
