Germany’s Theather der Welt is committed to providing a room with a view. Hotel ShabbyShabby commissioned the construction of 22 temporary standalone hotel rooms for the Mannheim-based theater festival this past May. Sited at the convergence of the Neckar and Rhine rivers, The Hedonist, a transparent cabin entry by Nuno Pimenta, Frederico Tavares de Pinho, and Miguel C. Tavares from Portugal, was fully booked for stays even before it reached completion. Each Hotel ShabbyShabby space was required to cost less than $320 and to be made of recyclable, recycled, or reused material from the city’s trash. The rooms were built on site at the festival and then set in locations around the city of Mennheim to provide distinct vistas in seclusion. The Hedonist is a 434-square-foot room with a 360-degree natural panorama. Pallets, steel props, and cables converge to create a rectangular box. A corrugated fiberglass sheet wraps this frame for weatherproof views of the river delta, sometimes interrupted by industrial ships. Curtains can be pulled for privacy.
